How to Do Dip Powder Nails

Staying at home means avoiding the nail salon, and as someone who always  smudges regular nail polish (seriously, how is it possible that they can still  be ready to smear by the time I go to bed?), I have a newfound appreciation for the variety of modern manicure solutions available. I previously reviewed Ohora's at-home gel strips , which are a great option for hassle-free designs. Another option that I really like, even though I am far  from a pro, is dip powder. Dip powder is essentially an acrylic powder that contains pigments or glitters. You purchase a set of liquids that can be used with the powders of your choice for a quick and clean manicure that requires very little dry time. Dip powder is easily accessible, and if you're new to dip nails in general, I'd suggest a reasonably priced option for practice. I started with the Lavender Violets brand on Amazon, which comes with a set of powders + all the liquids you need for a beginner. I did find that the l...

Cheeseburger Spring Rolls and Carrot "Fries"

Sometimes you have a craving for something cheesy and delicious, and only a good old fashioned, American cheeseburger will do.

But sometimes, your waistline says, "easy on the burgers", or you need to eat gluten free and don't have any gluten free burgers buns on hand.

In those cases, these cheeseburger spring rolls are here to save the day. Luckily, they are completely customizable and up to the challenge of satisfying your burger cravings. Plus, I'm firmly of the belief that if you take a comfort food classic and make it smaller and dippable, you can't lose!

Cheeseburger Spring Rolls by @cupcakesandcoffeebreaks

Serve them up with a side of roasted carrot "fries"-- note, the fries won't exactly fool you into thinking they are actual french fries, but they did have my toddler uttering the phrase, "More carrots, please?" Sold? Then read on for the recipes!

Cheesy, awesome Cheeseburger Spring Rolls from @cupcakesandcoffeebreaks

Cheeseburger Spring Rolls

Makes about 8 spring rolls.

Ingredients

  • Approximately 8 spring roll wrappers
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • Your favorite burger-topping cheese
  • Pickle slices or relish
  • Condiments, for dipping
  • Your favorite burger seasonings (I used salt and pepper, smoked paprika, cayenne, and garlic powder)
  • 1-2 tbsp of melted butter or olive oil
  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Brown the ground beef on the stove, seasoning with your chosen spices. If you use the mix noted above, I did not use any measurements. Just throw a few dashes of everything in while cooking (easy on the cayenne). Set aside.
  3. Put some water in a shallow dish or on a plate with slight edges. Soak one rice wrapper for about 10-15 seconds until just bendable (it will continue to soften after removed from the water). Place on a wet cloth or small towel, and quickly top with ground beef, cheese, and the pickle or small squeeze of relish. Wrap tightly and place on a greased baking pan.
  4. Repeat step 2 for all spring rolls.
  5. Brush the tops of the spring rolls gently with butter or oil.
  6. Bake for 15 minutes, and then broil for 2 minutes until crispy.
  7. Remove from the oven, and place them on a sheet with a paper towel-- while you should only use a little oil, the meat and cheese may cause some grease while cooking.
  8. Serve with your choice of condiments for dipping! I suggest ranch dressing and ketchup mixed with a kick of sriracha!
Old Bay Carrot "Fries" with Sriracha Ketchup from @cupcakesandcoffeebreaks

Carrot "Fries"

Ingredients

  • 4 or 5 medium sized carrots, chopped into sticks
  • sprinkle of cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp melted butter or olive oil
  • Seasoning, such as Old Bay seafood seasoning, or cajun seasoning
  • Optional: ketchup + sriracha
These can easily be made simultaneously with the cheeseburger spring rolls.
  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Toss your carrots with the sprinkle of cornstarch.
  3. Toss with melted butter or oil.
  4. Lay in a single sheet on a greased baking sheet, and season with Old Bay or your choice of seasoning.
  5. Bake for 15 minutes, then flip and bake for 10-15 more. Broil for 2.
  6. Serve with dipping sauce of ketchup and sriracha.

Curly Girl Routine for Wavies: My Secretly Wavy Hair

My hair has been straight for my entire life. Puffy-straight. "Needs time to calm down" after blow drying it, straight. Works great with extra heavy conditioner, straight.  Sure, occasionally I'd wake up with a few curls here and there, but after brushing my hair-- because brushing is a must!-- they would disappear into a puff of frizz, so I'd add some serum and calm it down. It literally never dawned on me that my straight hair struggles were happening because my hair wasn't straight. Sure, it had some  wave, sometimes, but I just assumed straight hair was the default. Mine was puffy and needed help all the time, but it was straight. It turns out, I'm not alone. In fact, this blogger  had the same realization, and the descriptions of her hair rang true for me as well. I've always had "damaged ends" or "a texture issue", even right after a major haircut. So what gives? About two years ago I decided it was time to do a big chop, and cut ...
